Building, level and date
Before you can look at anything you have to say where and when. SiteView asks both questions near the top of the screen: the topbar selectors choose the place, and the capture date in the viewport chooses the day.
This article covers both, and the two views that show all your captures at once: the capture timeline and Capture Grid.
Choosing the place
The selectors in the topbar run left to right, and each one filters the next: pick a building, then one of its levels, then a work area.
Building or Site - the first selector
The first selector names the building you are in. Open it and it lists two groups:
| Group | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Sites | The Site: the whole project area rather than one building. When you pick it, the second selector changes from levels to capture types: Ground Capture and Drone Capture. Only the types that have a capture are listed |
| Buildings | Every building in the project. Pick one and the level list changes to that building's levels |
A building with no captures is greyed out in the list and cannot be picked.
Building is new at 5.0. On a project with one building you will hardly notice it; on a campus or a multi-tower job it is where you start.
- The first selector - the building you are in; click to change it.
- Sites - the whole site, for site-wide and drone captures.
- Buildings - every building in the project; a greyed-out one has no capture yet.
Pick another building and the viewer moves there: the level selector shows that building's levels, the capture date changes to one of its captures, and the floor plan inset shows its plan.
- Energy Facility / Basement - the building and level you picked.
- The date follows the building - Apr 15, 2026, this level's own latest capture.
- This level's plan - Basement_Overall_Plan 1.
Level - the second selector
The level selector lists the levels of the building you picked. The icon beside each level tells you whether it was captured on the date you are on: filled means yes, dashed means no capture that day.
Once you pick a level, the floor plan inset at the bottom left shows it with every waypoint on it. Click a waypoint to stand there.
- The level selector - the levels of this building.
- A filled icon - this level has a capture on the date you are on (L4, L3 and L2 on Apr 8, 2024); picking it keeps the date.
- A dashed icon - no capture on this date (L1); picking it moves you to that level's nearest capture.
Work area - the third selector
Where work areas have been set up on a level, a third selector follows the level and narrows the view to one of them. It has a Search box for levels with many work areas.
Work areas are set up by an administrator in the Project Admin Center. See Project Setup.
When a selector is not there
SiteView hides a selector rather than showing you an empty one:
| You see | Because |
|---|---|
| No work-area selector | This level has no work areas set up |
| No work-area selector on a drone capture | Drone data is not divided into work areas |
| Ground Capture or Drone Capture missing under the Site | The Site has no capture of that type |
Info - where you are standing
To check where you are, click Info in the topbar. The Location tab shows the geolocation, building, level, work area and closest room of the spot you are standing on; Capture Data shows the capture itself.
A field reads Not available when the project has nothing for it, for example a level with no work areas.
- Info - opens Information for the photo you are standing in; first-person only.
- Location - geolocation, building, level, work area and closest room of this spot; Not available means none is set up here.
Choosing the day
A site is captured again and again. The capture timeline shows every date for the spot you are standing on; Capture Grid shows every capture on the building at once.
The capture date
The capture date sits at the top left of the viewport and shows the day you are looking at. Click See other dates beside it to open the capture timeline.
The capture timeline
The timeline is one spot, every date. It opens across the top of the viewer, newest on the left, with an arrow at the right end for older dates.
- Click See other dates.
- Click a thumbnail. The viewer moves to that date and you stay where you are standing.
- Click the arrow under the strip to close it.
In 4.0, changing the date meant losing your position. In 5.0 the position holds and only the date changes, so two dates show you the same place.
- Capture cards - one per date, newest on the left; click a card to open that date.
- Capture Intelligence badge - Capture Intelligence found something in that capture.
- No capture on this level - the date exists in the project, but not on this level.
- More dates - scrolls to older dates.
Which photo you are looking at
Each thumbnail is the capture nearest to where you are standing on that date, on the same level. It is not a fixed camera position. Capture positions move between visits, so on an older date the nearest one can be some way off.
That is what the distance badge is for. A thumbnail reading 5+ m away (16+ ft away in imperial) means the nearest capture on that date is more than five metres from where you are now. It is still worth a look, but it is not a like-for-like comparison.
When there is no photo
Two cells say so rather than showing you nothing:
| Cell | What it means | Click it to |
|---|---|---|
| A placeholder with no picture | There is a capture on that date, but no thumbnail could be made for it | Open the capture as usual |
| No capture on this level | That date has captures elsewhere in the project, just not on this level | Open Open a Captured Level and pick a level captured on that date, then Go to |
Capture Intelligence in the timeline
A thumbnail with a small sparkle badge means Capture Intelligence found something in that capture. It is the fastest way to scan a history: you can see which visits turned something up without opening any of them.
- Hover a badged thumbnail. The first lines of the analysis replace the picture.
- Click Show more for the full analysis.
- Click Open in it to move the viewer to that capture.
What the analysis contains, and which captures get one, is in Capture Intelligence Overview.
Capture Grid - every capture at once
The timeline is one spot. Capture Grid is the whole building: click it in the topbar and Captures by Area & Date opens over the viewer.
| Part | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Rows | The levels of the building you are in |
| Columns | Capture dates, newest on the left. The date you are on is highlighted |
| A cell with an icon | A capture of that level on that date. Click it to open it; you land where you were standing, on the new date, where the capture allows |
| A hatched cell | Nobody captured that level that day. It is not an error, and it is common |
| A row with no icons | A level that has never been captured. It stays in the grid so you can see the gap |
To answer when was this level last captured?, read along its row to the first filled cell from the left.
The row across the top right is a legend, not a filter: 3D Map, 360 Tour, External Points and Drone are the capture types, and Pano here marks a capture that has 360 photos.
- Capture Grid - opens and closes the grid.
- The legend - 3D Map, 360 Tour, External Points, Drone, and Pano here (a capture exists where you stand). It is a key, not a filter.
- Capture dates - newest on the left.
- The date you are on - highlighted; click any icon to open that level on that date.
- The levels of this building - one row each.
