Work areas are zones you draw: safety areas, inspection routes, construction phases, rooms. Areas are grouped into a Work Area Set, and because a Set is a Design Reference it is drawn once and mounted wherever it is needed: to the Site, or to any number of levels. Everything in one Set shares one coordinate frame and moves together.
Here the Dormitory set is open: five areas, drawn over Dormitory B's floor plan and mounted to its four levels.
- The Set and its areas - five areas in the Dormitory set. The eye hides an area while you work; the padlock stops it being moved.
- Drawing, Show reference plan, 3D - the plan shown behind the areas, whether it shows, and a 3D view.
- Mounted to - the levels the Set is on, each with its elevation; Edit opens the mount dialog.
- Flags - Activate puts the Set in the apps; Visible and Lock Transformation are for working on it.
Create a Work Area Set
- On Work Areas, choose + Add Work Area Set.
- Enter a Name (required). Names do not have to be unique.
- Optionally pick a Type, a label your team defines under Team Settings > Standards > Work Area Types. It organises Sets; it changes nothing about where they go or how the apps treat them.
- Pick a Reference Drawing, the plan you will draw over. Any drawing in the project can serve.
- Create Set.
- + Add Work Area Set - starts a new Set.
- What a Set is - areas that share one coordinate frame and are mounted together.
- Name - required; names need not be unique.
- Type - a label your team defines in Team Settings; it changes nothing about placement.
- Reference Drawing - the plan you draw over; only a backdrop.
- Create Set - creates it, empty.
Draw work areas
- Expand the Set and choose + Add Work Area.
- Click each corner of the zone on the canvas. Select an area again to drag, add or delete corners.
- Set its properties (table below).
- Save. Edits pile up, and the header shows Unsaved changes until you do; nothing is kept before then.
| Property | What it does |
|---|---|
| Fill Color, Opacity | How the zone looks: a hex value with a swatch, and a slider |
| Elevation, Height | How it sits in 3D; height defaults to 3 m |
| Publish | On by default, but the area only shows once its Set is activated; the panel says Hidden in apps until Set '...' is activated |
| Visible, Lock Transformation | Hide it while you work; stop a finished zone from being dragged by accident |
| Void | + Add Void cuts a hole inside the area |
- The selected area - selected in the list and on the canvas, where its corners can be dragged.
- Fill Color and Opacity - how the area looks.
- Elevation and Height - how it sits in 3D; height starts at 3 m.
- Publish - on, but hidden in the apps until its Set is activated.
- Void - + Add Void cuts a hole in the area.
- Unsaved changes / Save - edits pile up until Save; nothing is kept before then.
The canvas
Each row in the Set list has an eye to hide the area and a padlock to lock it. Above the canvas, the Drawing selector picks the backdrop, Show reference plan turns it on and off, and 3D switches the view. The toolbar below has undo and redo, a grid toggle, snapping and zoom.
Mount a Work Area Set
Select the Set itself (not one of its areas) to see the whole of it: its status chip (Draft until you activate it), Work Area Types with Manage Types, the Reference Drawing, Mounted to with each level and its elevation, its Flags (Activate, Visible, Lock Transformation), and the Work Areas in it with their height and number of corners.
- Choose Edit beside Mounted to. The Mount dialog opens: Pick destinations - Compatible Nodes only.
- Use the Site tab, or the Levels tab, which lists every level grouped by building with Select all.
- Tick where the Set goes, and Apply. Apply stays greyed out until something has changed.
- Mount: Dormitory - the dialog for this Set.
- Every level it could go to - grouped by building, with Select all.
- Dormitory B - the four levels it is mounted to now.
- Apply - greyed out until something changes.
- Mounted to, with Edit - the same list on the Set's panel.
- Activate - still off, so nothing is in the apps yet.
Where the frame comes from
This is where the frame is decided. Mounted to a level, the Set is placed in that building's BCS; mounted to the Site, in the PCS. You never choose a Set's frame by hand, and the same Set on four identical floors is still one Set.
To reach the apps, a Set follows the same rule as any reference (Activated, mounted, and published on that node), and an area shows only when both its Set and the area itself are published. In the Skeleton, a mounted Set sits under its level's Work Area Sets group with a Mounted chip, and once published its areas are drawn on the project map.
