What it controls
A project can carry several BIM files, and each file can offer several views of itself. The BIM Selector is where you choose which of them the model pane draws.
It has two tabs, BIM and DWG. Under BIM the entries are grouped by file, each with its version, and beneath each file are its views, each with its own switch.

One at a time, or several?
The switches are drawn as independent toggles, one per view. In the recording, switching HVAC on turned every Architecture view off at the same moment, and the model-name chip above the pane changed from Architecture (1).rvt to HVAC.rvt.
When a task's elements are not in a model you have on
Selecting a task whose elements live in a model that is switched off puts a message under the Gantt: “This task's BIM elements are in models that are not turned on in the BIM Selector.” The elements are drawn as a pale wireframe rather than not at all.
The fix is the message's own: open the BIM Selector and switch on the model that holds them. This is the most common confusion on this surface — a task looks like it has nothing behind it when it is only hidden.
