Connect in this order
Most connection problems are ordering problems. Do it the same way every time:
| Step | Do this |
|---|---|
| 1 | Connect the USB cable to the computer. |
| 2 | Turn the camera on. |
| 3 | Connect the camera to the cable. |
Connecting a powered-off camera, or powering it on after the cable, is the most common reason the computer never sees it.
If the camera is unresponsive
Check it is powered on. Then re-do the sequence above.
If it has frozen, hard reset it. Remove the battery or do a factory reset — which one depends on the model.
On an Insta360, check the USB mode. It can default to Android, and the camera's drive will not appear on the computer until the mode is changed.
Cables, hubs, ports and cards
| Suspect | What to try |
|---|---|
| The cable | Use the cable that came with the camera. A charge-only cable carries power and no data, and looks identical. |
| A USB hub | Remove it and connect straight to the computer. Hubs are a frequent cause and an easy thing to rule out. |
| The port | Try another one, and prefer a port on the machine itself over one on a dock. |
| The SD card | Try reading the card directly in a reader. If the card is readable and the camera is not, the problem is the camera or the cable, not the files. |
